The city of Lohardaga is the headquarters of Lohardaga district in the state of Jharkhand. It is home to a large number of tribals and is known for its rich and varied culture. History of Lohardaga

Reference to Lohardaga can be found in the Jain literature regarding Lord Mahavira’s visit to a place called ‘Lore-a-Yadaga’, meaning the ‘River of tears’. This place also finds its mention in Aain-e-Akbari. The ancient fort ruins and temples stand witness to the glorious past and rich cultural heritage of Lohardaga. It is said that the name ‘Lohardaga’ originated from the words, ‘lohar’ meaning, iron monger and ‘dagga’ meaning centre. Around 1765, this area came under the control of the British. However in the year 1972, Lohardaga came to be recognised as an independent sub division and it became a district in the year 1983, after the splitting up of Ranchi into Ranchi, Lohardaga and Gumla.

Geography and Climate of Lohardaga

Located between the co-ordinates 23.4333o North latitudes and 84.6833o East Longitude, the city of Lohardaga enjoys a mild and pleasant climate throughout the year. In summer, the weather is quite hot, while winters are relatively milder and cooler. The average annual rainfall received here is about 1000 to 1200 millimetres and it decreases gradually from west to east. The average annual temperature of Lohardaga is about 23o C. An ideal time to visit this city for sight-seeing and tourism would therefore be during the months of October and November, when the climate is pleasing. According to the census carried out in the year 2011, the population of this city is 57,411, out of which there are 29,374 males and 28,037 females.

Tribals in Lohardaga

More than half of the population in the city of Lohardaga are tribals. While majority of the people here belong to the Oraon tribe, other popular tribes found in this city are Asur tribe, Birjia tribe, etc. The tribal as well as the non – tribal communities here preserve their rich cultural heritage. Hindi, Nagpuri, Kurukh, Asuri are the languages widely spoken by the people of Lohardaga. The tribals depend upon forest resources for their livelihood and thus share a symbiotic and spiritual relationship with nature. Located at a distance of about 77 kilometres from Lohardaga, Birsa Munda Airport at Ranchi is the airport nearest to the city of Lohardaga. It is well connected to major Indian cities by frequent flights run by leading airlines. Lohardaga city is connected to the capital, Ranchi by a metre gauge railway line. Efforts are being undertaken by the government for the improvement of existing roadways and connectivity to and from the city of Lohardaga. Many local passenger trains run from Lohardaga Railway Station to major nearby destinations on a frequent basis. Besides, many private agencies offer bus and taxi services for sight-seeing within and around this city.

Economy and Industrialism in Lohardaga

Majority of the people in this city depend upon agriculture and forest produce for their livelihood. Paddy and wheat are the major crops cultivated by the people of this region. Millets, oilseeds, pulses and vegetables are also grown by the people of this region. Dairy farming is also practised by the non – tribal people of this region and goats and poultry birds are reared here. Some people are engaged in small scale industries. The district of Lohardaga is one of the most backward districts of Jharkhand state and receives grant from Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).
